Warwick and I went out to Broken Hills - a DoC recreational area in the ranges near Pauanui (well near the Pauanui turn off). It offers lots of different walks - most of them loops which take you past interesting scenery - some tunnels, waterfalls, batteries, water races, etc. Wish it was warmer, because these waterfall pools would have been great to swim in. It is less than an hour from Te Mata Lodge - with lots of little side trips possible (the beaches of Whangamata, Paunaui, Opoutere, Matatoki Cheese Factory).
